Welcome to the Australian
Ranch.
AUSTRALIAN RANCH LTD. is owned & operated by the Yorston
Family. Bob along with his wife Lenore, and daughter Kerri currently operate
the ranch. We do our silage up in a pit. Alfalfa, (two crops plus third
is left till frost, and cows turned on to it for a month) orchard grass,
peas and barley, and corn are the main forage crops. The fields and pastures
are irrigated with wheel moves and some flood irrigation, and one gun.
We have a cow / calf operation. 300 cows is the magic number to sustain
the ranch. The cows are of a variety of breeds. Charolais and Hereford
were the start of our herd in 1981. We had operated a feed lot for many
years. From feeder heifers, we chose 77 heifers from two of our favourite
herds in the Quesnel area. Later in 1988 another influx of heifers from
three other great herds, bringing Simmental into the mix. Artificial Insemination
was great for mixing and matching to make a top notch herd of replacements,
for the ageing original herd. Black Simmental, Black Saler, Black Limosine,
Red Charloais, all the common colours of these breeds. Even a couple Simbras!
Angus influence is very prevalent currently. Kerri has been the herds
person for several years now. Angus has caught her eye. A good eye it
is!
Hallis Lake Community Pasture is home to our yearling heifers, and some
of the cow/calf pairs for the summer. The rest of the cattle are pastured
on our deeded land at home here on the ranch and 40-50 pairs up on our
pasture above the farm.
Shavings for bedding, bought from spring to fall when ever the loads
are available. They are pushed into a huge pile for use all winter to
keep the animals comfortable and clean.
Late summer, the manure from the sheds, and bedding piles are put in
rows 5 feet deep, and turned every 3 days, for 6 weeks to make a compost
for about 120 acres
Our calving is done at a calving barn not too far from the house. Walkie
talkies are handy, so one person can check, if need to call for help.
Twins, and some mal presentations are our most common problems. When too
many backwards or breach occur, the loads of feed become smaller. No room
for the calf to turn! 100% calf crop is always our goal. Numerous sets
of twins, usually cover the losses.
Kerri and Lenore will begin their new marketing method in spring of 2008.
The cull cows will be made into dried beef dog food in 150 g. sealed bags,
$5.00 each. Wonderful bones with either raw meat $1.00 per lb. or cooked
meat on them,$2.00 per lb. are also available, sealed and frozen. They
honestly look good enough to eat, but are not human consumption, as we
butcher on the farm and cut and process the dog food our selves. Call
250-747-8339 if interested in feeding your dogs, pure beef, no additives,
no preservatives, no antibiotics, no steroids are given to any of our
animals. Beef for human consumption, 14-16 month old beef, government
inspected, cut wrapped & frozen available in any size packages, and
cut of beef. We do need you to pre order. There will be a limited amount
this year, but 2009 we plan to have a year round supply, of grass or silage
fed beef, priced the same or less than any of the beef suppliers in Quesnel.
100 mile diet is the only way to go. The ethical treatment of our animals
is obvious in the tenderness and flavour of our beef. There is no need
to feed cattle grain, it is unhealthy for people to eat animals forced
to eat grain.
